COMMUNITY ARTIST

KUVITELTU MALMI (2019-2020)

Kuviteltu Malmi (Imagine Malmi) was a community art project in the area of Malmi, Helsinki. Together with Emilia Erfving we worked with locals producing fine art photography pieces for public outdoor spaces. The art pieces presented local´s visions and wishes about the future of Malmi. The pieces were designed and made with a group of people living in Malmi area.  During the process also other locals participated by for example donating pictures of their hands as a part of one piece.

The pieces were designed to be a part of electric boxes and as a technique we combined taping and spray painting.

The project aimed to give locals an opportunity to imagine their future living environment in Malmi and also to produce art content as a part of it. It also aimed to strengthen the local identity of Malmi´s area and make possible for people to experience art in their daily lives for example on their way to work or grocery shopping.

Kuviteltu Malmi was a commission for City of Helsinki and a part of the project to develop the area of Malmi. The tapes were sponsored by Innobrand.

OUTOMAA MALMI (2016-2019)

Outomaa Malmi (Strangeland Malmi) was a three-year community art project located in the area of Malmi, Helsinki. The project combined fine art photography and art educational content. It aimed to bring art to the area as a part of everyday life and create ways for people to make and present their own art. The project was produced by All Walls collective.

The project promoted the idea that photography is a creative and expressive media that can be used to form new kinds of positive relations to the reality.

During the project we organised several small art events, exhibitions, workshops and performances. We also founded a photography community called Valotila, which focused on developing one’s own artistic expression and extending the perceptions of photography. After Outomaa Malmi project ended, members of Valotila wanted to continue and they now work as self-organised community.

Outomaa Malmi was funded by the City of Helsinki with two separate grants.
